Common Causes of Blocked Toilets

What can you do about a blocked toilet?

Perhaps you’ve dreaded something like this happening, because after all, it’s not exactly the best situation to find yourself in. You may have invited guests round, and naturally you want the place to be perfect only to realise you have a blocked toilet.  You soon realise that no amount of flushing is going to help whatever it is that’s blocking it.

That’s when you need to sit down for a moment and think about what it is you can do to correct the problem before calling in a professional.

What are the most common causes of blocked toilets?

Have you considered that you or other members of your family are flushing down the wrong materials? This could be anything from wet wipes, different types of cotton wool, dental floss, sanitary towels or nappies. If you think that other members of the family are trying to flush things like this down the loo, it may be time to have a chat with them and educate them on the dos and don'ts of flushing!

This could be the long-term solution you’ve been looking for - because if people have been flushing things down that they shouldn't be, once you’ve put a stop to it, it should be the end of your problems, but what if this isn’t the case?

The U bend is useful but it can be tricky for sticky objects.

Down around the U bend is where stuff gets stuck. This part of the piping is always filled with water and acts as a barrier to removing bad smells that can build up. However the downside of your U bend is that it can also trap things in it that shouldn’t be there at all. Clogging and blockages are an enemy of the U bend, and this is why you need to be careful.

If you catch it early and it doesn’t seem too bad you can try using a plunger which can do a lot to help get rid of the blockage. If this doesn’t work then it could be something more serious.

The sewer line blockage.

Your problem may not be in your bend, vent or drain pipe; it could be in the sewer line underneath the property. It could involve an investigation that results in digging up the sewer and removing the blockage itself.
