When is Drain Excavation Necessary?

We recommend drain excavations when you’re left with no other options. It’s a difficult job and we wouldn’t recommend it unless we believed it to be absolutely essential. We’re talking about careful safety monitoring here and this can be expensive, so we’ll always try every other method first until we’ve exhausted all other options.

Under What Circumstances is it Used?

Drain excavation is used is when the blockage is so bad that no other method has worked. It involves digging deep with the aim of finding the problem area and resolving it. It could be that the drain is old and hasn’t been looked at in many years and has fallen into a state of disrepair. Or it could be the case that the drain has been on the receiving end of extreme damage from the weather such as heavy rain, wind, flooding and possibly even blocked by debris such as tree branches and roots as they’ve been uprooted by the wind.

Professional Drain Excavation Service

Rest assured that if we do have to do this we are all professionally trained to do it. This isn’t a haphazard job, this is a perfectly well executed exercise managed by engineers with years of experience. There’s a site assessment, health and safety risk assessment, and a plan on how the excavated material from the drain will be placed aside from the actual digging itself.

Throughly Planned Process

A site assessment will involve pre-excavation investigative work to ascertain where the actual problem is so we don’t dig in the wrong place. We also need to check that there’s no gas, water or electricity mains nearby as well as to check other safety aspects. These can include the utility connections we’ve already mentioned and also to check the stability of the ground so there’s no chance of subsidence. We will either dig by hand or use a mini excavator because we want to create the least amount of disruption as we can.

We will make every attempt to work out with you or by ourselves where we need to store the excavated material. Space will need to be made to backfill it or we can find storage for it so it is dry and stored safely. That way it won’t cause a safety hazard, and it can be disposed of later in a responsible way.

The trench that was dug up must be filled so that there will be no subsidence at a later time, with the area strengthened so it doesn’t collapse, with anything from poles to concrete to give extra support.
