Pipe Lining: What Is It and Why Do You Need It?

Pipe lining maybe sounds a bit like something you don’t need to know about? It’s helpful if you do, because you may be in need of it yourself at some point. Drains can seem pretty uncomplicated, after all the job they carry out is functional and fairly simple - to rid your house of waste, and to remove the hidden dangers this might pose if it isn’t.

But wait a minute - what about those temperamental drain-pipes - could they be broken and damaged internally, where you can’t see it?

Every now and again, your drains can be temperamental, and there might be a perfectly valid explanation. It could be they’ve become worn, corroded and broken over several months or years of use, and have become ineffective at removing waste effectively.

Once they reach this point, they need to be investigated, and it pays to know what the terminology is. If a technician such as one of ourselves turns up and starts talking shop, it helps if you know what we’re talking about. That’s not to say we’ll just throw complex jargon at you, we always explain everything as best we can to all our clients, however, having a decent fundamental understanding of the techniques we use is always helpful.

So, warming to our theme, what is pipe lining?

Pipe lining is a solution for your pipes when they become problematic - a non-permanent solution.

It’s an amazing pipe lining technology that’s been developed in order to mimic the twists and turns of your drain pipes, much like an internal sock if this helps make it simpler to imagine. Pipe lining is needed when your pipes have become cracked, there’s an odd assortment of roots and other debris that’s infiltrated the lining of your pipes or through holes, and they have become eroded. Pipe lining is an excellent solution for this. You can also ‘re-pipe’ by simply replacing them with new ones. Of course, it would depend on how bad the damage was and whether pipe lining was a worthwhile solution for your pipes. If your pipes are damaged beyond repair, new ones may be a far better option.

What is the process for pipelining and is this the right solution for you?

Before we start lining the pipes, we first need to carry out an investigation, and this will include mapping your drains using CCTV. This allows us to look deep inside your drains to see what the problem is and how bad it is. The drains are then cleaned, and sometimes water jets are used to do this. A felt liner can be pushed through to the damaged part of your pipes through the exiting point of your drains, and they can just line certain pipe lengths where it’s at its most damaged or line the entire drainage pipe system.

Another final look around.

Finally, this can be followed through with another final rigorous CCTV inspection, this can help us see that we’ve been thorough enough and that there are no further problems to deal with that we may have potentially missed the first time around.

Pipe-lining helps to avoid the expense of more costly techniques popular back in the day.

Pipe lining helps to avoid more costly and invasive techniques such as digging into the drains to fix new ones. Pipe lining then is a modern and technologically efficient way of fixing broken drain pipes, while also helping to avoid further damage to the fragile part of the drains.
