By keeping your drains and clear and free of blockages you’re making life much easier for yourself. As you can imagine, the longer you leave your drains to its own devices, the easier it is for it to become full of difficult to budge blockages, items that won’t move and you have to call the professionals out to do something about it.

Try to find out what’s causing the problem, before it happens again.

You need to find the root of the problem, because after you’ve dealt with one blockage, you could be dealing with another identical one a little further down the line. Perhaps you get a lot of leaves and branches coming off a tree close to your garden, or one actually in your garden that hangs over the drains or guttering. Possibly you have a lot of birds who nest in the guttering, and leaves and other debris fall into the drains. If you find out what the problem is, you may be able to stop it from happening.

Be cautious about what you put down the toilet or sink.

Also, as is often the case, people try to flush things down the toilet that shouldn’t go down there at all. It could be something like baby wipes, hair, loose coffee granules, so stop and think. What are you putting down there, and could you perhaps have a word with everyone in the house so you can put a stop to it?

Try some good old cupboard supplies on your drains before you call us in.

You can also use hot water poured down the sink or vinegar and bicarb of soda for indoor blockages, this can often help dislodge minor blockages, so you have a nice clean drain. It’s also relatively inexpensive because these are items most people have in their cupboards.

You can also use a plunger and see if this will dislodge the offending item.

Again, this is something you should have in your garage or lying around somewhere in a cupboard, it’s a handy little item to have around for when the drains are blocked.
