Drainage services are a niche that only those who work as drainage specialists would know about. The only time you have an interest is when it’s time to have your drains cleared by an expert, someone you’ve called in specially to deal with blocked drains.
He or she may explain to you what the problem is, and although you nod approvingly you may not have a clue what they’re talking about. With this in mind we’ve come up with a few terms and an explanation for what each one means. That way, the next time someone talks to you about the drainage services you’ll be able to understand what they’re talking about and cut through the jargon!
Dye Testing
This is when a colour, non-toxic, is sent down the drain which shows up where a leak in your drainage system is and where it’s coming from.
Drain Rodding
A rod is used to clear a blockage in your drains, there’s usually a cleaning attachment at the end of it for a more effective clearing.
Drain Unblocking
Today’s methods are usually very sophisticated and specialist techniques can be anything from using high pressure water jetting or root cutting which helps unblock the drain and restore it back to its normal state.
Collapsed Drains
If you have one of these then it could have been caused by anything, from tree roots, freezing and then thawing and wear and tear in general which can create extreme damage to your drains which then results in collapse. A collapse of this nature can cause disruption to your drainage system which can then lead to leaks and blockages in your home.
Drain / Manhole Inspections
Sometimes you have to dig deep to see where the problem lies. An inspection can involve using CCTV technology so we can see what exactly is blocking your drains and to give us a clearer picture of what we need to do to clear it.
Drain Cleaning
A good drain clean procedure will help your drains from becoming clogged and by clearing up debris build-up you prevent problems from occurring in the first place. The type of methods we use usually include rodding and drain jetting.
Drain Jetting
This is a method which uses high pressure water jets to remove debris from your drains quickly and efficiently. They’re renowned for getting into areas of the pipes which are normally very hard to access.
Drain Relining
This is good for drains which have been specifically damaged by leaks or root growth. What happens is that a soft lining will be inserted within the pipework where a chemical process will take place to make the inside of your drains hard, durable and functional again.
CCTV Surveys
A camera is inserted deep below to assess the damage to a drain, it can see much further and clearer than manual methods. It’s certainly effective and something that we use here at East of Scotland Drainage Services.
So, there you have it, the next time you have to call a drainage services contractor out and they, or hopefully ‘we,’ explain the procedures needed to overcome the problem, you should have a good idea of the terminology used. Don’t forget, here at East of Scotland Drainage Services, we’re a friendly bunch, so we’re always happy to explain in more detail, if that’s what’s needed.
